German Romanticism. What’s that? Sounds like a subject for a literature course or an element in A-Level music. True. We label things, then they sort of dry up as just a word in some filing register in our brains. To understand German Romanticism you have to sit on a rock somewhere looking anguished (preferably above the tree line), wipe your brow and sigh……..

or ….go to the Darmstadt Opera, a hike in the Odenwald or listen to the Figuralchor Frankfurt.

    I start in Darmstadt…….walking past the 1827 – completed Ludwigskirche…….

    …..to reach today’s modern opera house…….

I was starting at the end of German Romanticism, with an extraordinary opera by Felix Weingartner…….

    Photo: Liudmila

The first performance was in Darmstadt in 1914. And it was very well received. But 1914? Unfortunately yes – WWI soon swept it away into oblivion. So that was that with German Romanticism.

    Photo: Liudmila Firagina

Weingartner was actually a very well-known conductor and composer in his time This one-act opera Cain and Abel, is like a last gasp of Romanticism…….

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_Weingartner

It needs a huge lush orchestra..and we got it…..just count the double basses! (The chorus in the picture also sang Psalm 130 by Lili Boulanger – another seldom-heard work.

So. German Romanticism. It’s liking eating rhubarb crumble and cream at the end of a meal, then having a second helping.

As I say, The other options are to listen to the Figurachor or go to the Odenwald.. The choir’s concert this weekend s entitled

” Way above the treetops there is peace” (sigh)…..very apt…..

And last week’s hike was indeed in the Odenwald. You could compose ✍🏼 in a hut like this. On my walk from Bad König to Michelstadt, this was my first resting point. A hut named after the 19thc. polar explorer, Carl Weyprecht. It is even called a Temple. Not that there is any incense anywhere.

Huts or Hütte, they are really important in the countryside here. They are kept in good repair by local clubs…..

Up the hill I walked, and I’m sure Josef G. Rheinberger would have appreciated this….

And as for Carl Reinicke “……Oh Welt, du schöne Welt, man sieht sich vor Blüten kaum!………”

Time for another rest….only this time Catholicism peered over my shoulder. Should I be munching my sandwich or offering up a Hail Mary? German Romanticism fuses both faith, mysticism and folklore….

    Apple blossoms……

    Wild cherry….

My walking trail led me towards the Weiten Gesäß. In 3/4 somethings. (measurement unknown). That’s a pretty solid signpost. In modern German Gesäß means buttock, or rump. Which is of course what the hill ahead looked like – like an upturned bum. Such a fine strapping language eh?

But before I reached the Gesäß or buttock, another hut hoved into view…this time with a view down the valley….

“……mein ersehntes Ruhetal…..”

This would have been a spot for Felix Mendelssohn, languishing as he did over “……mein ersehntes Ruhetal…..” My longed-for valley…..

I stumbled across an old boundary marker. Were the Egyptians ever here? No.These strange signs are only a couple of hundred years old….

I should be able to find a song about a Bächlein or stream at this point…which would mean turning to Franz Schubert. But he wasn’t on the concert programme.

Try as hard as I can, I can’t find a link between Llamas and German Romanticism. Maybe someone has done a thesis on it somewhere…..

All I can say is that a Llama farm seems rather random…..

Ah, but here we are on more stable ground. Fresh eggs for sale in the village of Momart. A bit impractical for a hiker with a rucksack. We tend to specialize in the hard-boiled variety….

Laura Ashley or William Morris? Take your pick….

There’s no doubt about it. Some jobs (Priest, Minister), come with perks….

My feet were getting hot. And I’m only half way on a 14km walk. So what blessed apparition is this? It’s a Kneipp bath! What? you’ve never heard of a Kneipp bath? Shame on you. There is a rather dry entry on wiki …..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kneipp_facility

Basically, I do this: I tug off my walking boots, roll up my trousers (exposing my poor pale feet)……..

……and walk down the steps into the water. The effect is immediate 🤪. The water is only 10°c. A deliciously refreshing sensation shoots up my feet….wow!

As soon as my boots are back on I stride up the next hill, full of new energy and stirring lines……“…Flee with me and be my bride….” …….(all in one breath n.b 😂)…….

    Thank you Felix….

Now this is a curiosity. As I reach the outskirts of Michelstadt, my Komoot app mentions “Zeppelin houses”. I have difficulties finding anything about these. But it seems they were part of a community housing project in the 1900s. So they belong more in the Jugendstil/Art Nouveau era than German Romanticism. But they are curious nonetheless…..

    Waldstrasse, Michelstadt…..

Eventually I reach the old historic centre of Michelstadt. The view which is on all the postcards – the medieval market place. It really is a very pretty place. But the capuccino and ice cream were of that traditional old-fashioned variety, and left me wondering were the Gelataria 🍧 was…

oh well, who am I to grumble…

On my way to the railway station I take a detour around the old city walls…..

….and end up at the solid, reliable-looking station edifice at Michelstadt. But the loos are closed due to vandalism.

Never mind. My faithful VIAS train has built in conveniences – the genteel word in English for loos.

I shall be buying shares in them soon…..the train company that is, not the loos….

So here’s the map of my route….

▷ In the evening at home I listened to Abendlied from Josef Rheinberger. Ideally it would have been a recording from the Figuralchor, but we will have to make do with this…..

The Choir of Munich University…….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqzRWGhgGuI

    🔵 Rheingau

    April 17th 2026

📌 By the way, if you subscribe (scroll right down to the very end to find the link) to this blog, you can not only comment on it, but get it automatically when published.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The UK has got the Lake District, Japan has the Kamikochi Highlands (上高地) or the lakes of Yamanashi, and Germany has the Rheingau. (gau is an old word for district or area by the way)

I have been here countless times. Showing visitors the vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg, or the chair lifts at Rüdesheim and Assmanshausen. And of course going on many a wonderful hike.

But when you live in the Rhein-Main area you tend to get a bit blasé about it. Seen that. Done that etc.etc. But, depending on the season, it’s always different there. As I discovered last weekend.

I took the train to Lorch. But when I got out at that picturesque little village…..

……..I did not take the high walk above the river Rhein. Instead I headed up the leafy Sauerthal valley on a route that was called, charmingly, the Riesling Schleifen (the Riesling “bow”). I had just finished a nice bottle of Riesling back at home so this was most apt.

My boots crunched satisfyingly along the winding route……

….sometimes with too much crunch. Pause needed….

    Fresh April green was everywhere,

…..with flowers sprinkled around like magic charms to please the appreciative hiker…..

At some random road crossing I stumble across this devotional chapel – Der Heilig Kreuz Kapelle. Of course it’s locked, but you can peep inside…..

    …………………

    “…contributions to the upkeep….”

Further along the trail I cross a stream….

And for some reason someone has chosen this spot to park tractors…..

    That’s quite a tyre…………..

This is the moment. Take a selfie trying to look like a Real Man……Keep an eye on your local cinema for the new film: Tractor Man….starring you know who…..😆

Further up the valley the local inhabitants come out to see who is passing by….

But really, is a puddle in a track (left from a tractor tyre of course) a good place to plant future generations?

The plants sway lightly in the breeze, shaking their heads….

Eventually I reach the ruins of a small castle …Kleine Waldeck. It is a lonely outpost with views across the valley. But hello, a surprise……

I bend down to take this photo and at once notice something on the horizon. What’s that? a castle I never knew existed? And it’s in the wrong direction, ie away from the Rhein.

It looks like the Wartburg castle in Eisenach (where Luther translated the New Testament into German). A later Google search revealed this…The Sauerburg. Certainly off the beaten track….it’s even on Booking.com!

    https://sauerburg.de/

The path seems to climb forever. There are views far and near….

Up and up….until eventually a skyline of trees reveals glimpses of Vater Rhein down below…..

…and my starting point several hours earlier….The village of Lorch…..

As usual in these offbeat areas, there are few trains back to Frankfurt. I could get the next one, but I dream of an ice cream somewhere. After all, it’s now approaching 20°c…..

In the end, for lack of an ice cream café, (it is a rather small place) I opt for that bulwark of German tradition : K&K…otherwise known as Kaffee und Kuchen. Just what is needed….and what a cake! The lady serving me asks rather shyly what I think of it (hat’s geschmeckt?). Turns out she is the Konditotorin (pastry cook) who made it…..motto: always eat local produce…😉

So, thank you for your reading this, even though you may not have such a delicious cake in front of you. If you know anyone who might be interested in this blog then do forward it on.

    CONCERT ANNOUNCEMENT

I’m singing in this concert and am bold enough to say that it will be good ! The address is not on the poster, but it’s just north of hr Radio, at Kaiser-Sigmund-Str.47, Frankfurt. The Haus der Chöre is an excellent purpose-built rehearsal space for choirs in Frankfurt. And what is also not obvious from the poster is that James Guey, our incredible Korrepetitionist (accompanist) will also be playing solo on the new Flügel (grand piano).

    🐣 Hessen

    * The UK has counties, Japan has prefectures, and Germany has Bundesländer

    9th April 2026

✍🏼 In reponse to the seemingly unstoppable diarrhoea of whatsapp hiking messages invading my phone of late, I decided on radical action. I would do the unthinkable. I would put on my walking boots and take a day out just for me. A solo hike .

I choose my favourite railway line – the VIAS, a private company that offers a service from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof……

….directly into the hills and valleys of the Odenwald.

✍🏼 We slide out of Frankfurt to the sound of Easter bells from the Dom, and under the gaze of banks and insurance companies..

✍🏼 I feel good. At peace. I settle down in my seat and watch as the urban landscape of the Rhein-Main-Gebiet gradually gives way to fresher, rural colours……

✍🏼 A short stop at Darmstadt Nord, with its ugly graffitti and morose buildings. I am reminded that we still have a way to go…..but soon afterwards we are sailing through the green fields which border the Odenwald…..

✍🏼 I love train travel. You can talk or text to friends at ease whilst letting someone else do the driving. At some point I received an (evening) message from a friend in Tokyo …“…It looks like a very European landscape….somehow different from the scenery I always see from the train windows in Japan….”.

✍🏼 I alight at Hoechst in Odenwald, consulted my map, and walk through the town and over the Mümling river to reach a gorge famous for its fairy-tale path. The Obrunnschlucht. What a marvellous word that: Schlucht. (Gorge/Ravine).

✍🏼 The gorge has always been a favourite beauty spot for the locals, but it was only in the early part of the 20thc. that the idea came about to revive fairy tales by building little miniatures of castles, houses and churches in the woods. Here is the Maüseturm from the river Rhein – in a scale of 1:20

    …here a bear..or is it a wild boar?

Even nature seems to add some magical charm……

✍🏼 A storm, and subsequent vandalism in the 1960s threatened to consign this innocent project to oblivion. But in 2011, in a heartening show of local solidarity and initiative, local construction companies……like this one…

…..banded together to help rebuild…not only the little models….

…but also the footpaths and bridges……

As I walked up the gorge I noticed groups of excited little children chattering and enjoying the scene. Makes you happy to be alive.

    The Schwanenburg castle…

    …a more contemporary addition…..

✍🏼 Time for a rest on one of the many picnic benches provided for precisely that purpose. Out came my hard-boiled egg (an idea from a fellow hiker) and a phial of salt (a very practical present from yet another hiker!)

I never thought I would be publishing a photograph of an egg, but believe me, in the circumstances, it was absolutely delicious.

You could get poetic about it. Well, let’s move on before I get too carried away.

Reaching the top of the gorge…..

    I plunge into a tall, windswept woodland…..

… pines sway in the breeze..

…and at ground level inumerable wild anemones push up through last years’ leaves…..

✍🏼 Will I reach my next etappe before devouring my sandwiches? The way beckons invitingly…..

….and eventually, I reach the outskirts of the village of Breuberg. Here I catch my first sight of the eponymous castle…..

✍🏼 It looks so high, up there on the hill……Maybe the memory of these little Easter eggs will keep me going…..

    Frohes Ostern…..🐣…….

After a breather at the bridge…..

I start the steep climb to the castle. Frohes Ostern, yes, …..

but I am thinking of my sandwiches…..

However, blessed with excellent walking boots, the climb is not that bad…….

But I must admit it is a relief to finally reach the main gateway…

✍🏼 Berg Breuberg. Continuously inhabited since the 12th century, it has served at various times as a bailiff’s castle, a residence for noble families, a district administration office, a camp for forced labourers during World War II, and the site of a toy factory. Each era has left its mark.

A token cannon is all that is left of its firepower….

Whilst the interior has been converted into a youth hostel….for locking up unruly youth maybe?

✍🏼 It’s now only 5 km walk back to the railway station.. a pleasant route through the typically Hessen countryside…..

    wth its half-timbered Fachwerkhäuser……

    Only 1km to go…

✍🏼 As there is only one train an hour back to Frankfurt I can fit in a Spaghetti-Eis in the one remaining open café….and Komoot says that I have walked 16km.

    Not bad, Nigel 💪🏼.
